Are you tired of having to shave your legs on a regular basis? Many of our patients are considering laser hair removal to permanently reduce hair growth. Waxing is a painful experience for smooth legs that will only last four to six weeks. Why not invest in laser hair removal so you have one less thing to worry about this summer? Below, we give our top four reasons for why laser hair removal is better than waxing.

1. Reduced Hair Growth

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in your hair follicles with highly concentrated light. When the pigment absorbs the light, the hair follicle is destroyed. Keep in mind that laser hair removal treatment is more effective when there is a high contrast between the colors of the hair and skin. This means that people with dark hair and light skin are excellent candidates for laser hair removal. However, all skin tones can be treated safely.

Laser hair removal reduces hair growth. This means that any hair that grows back is sparse and thinner, making it easier to shave. While many beauty and medical spas try to advertise laser hair removal as being able to permanently remove body hair, this simply is not true for all people. You may still notice hair growth after your final hair removal treatment, but it will be significantly reduced. However, you will always have new hair grow back a few weeks after a waxing.

2. Less Pain

There is less pain associated with laser hair removal than with waxing. Depending on the area targeted for laser hair removal, you may experience what feels like tiny pin pricks. After your appointment, you can expect the skin to feel as though it was sunburned. To relieve the slight discomfort after laser hair removal, we recommend using cool compresses or moisturizers on the affected area. Temporary redness of the skin isn’t uncommon.

Waxing is painful because you are literally pulling out the hairs by the roots, which creates tiny wounds underneath the skin’s surface. After the waxing strip is applied to the skin, it is torn in the opposite direction of hair growth. For this reason, we don’t recommend waxing unwanted hair for people with low pain tolerances.

3. Less Treatments

It should be noted that Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. If you want to reduce the amount of time you spend in a medical and beauty spa, laser hair removal is the better choice. However, you will have to wait longer to see the results.

4. Precise Hair Removal

Lasers are able to target dark hairs without damaging the skin. This means that you are able to target specific areas, such as above the lip, without causing damage to the surrounding skin. Waxing, on the other hand, creates micro-injuries just under the skin where the hairs were ripped out by the roots.
